Abstract:
»Chapter 9, by Jones Maweranga and Godwins Lwinga, analyses the feminist digital campaign against Mwiza Chavura’s pro-rape song. The song, which describes a man’s plan to rape a woman for rejecting his advances, ignited a wave of feminist digital citizenship on platforms such as Facebook and in online tabloids like Nyasa Times and Malawi24. Malawian feminists mobilized online to critique the song and achieve its (reformist) banning. The chapter explores the intersectionality of feminist digital citizenship, cyberfeminism and rape culture, demonstrating how digital tools provided women a space to resist deeply rooted rape culture and demand accountability. By utilizing digital media to amplify their voices, feminists were able to organize widespread resistance against a song that reflected and perpetuated harmful societal norms. This digital feminist activism also led to greater awareness of Malawi’s rape culture and influenced public discourse on gender justice.«
